Join More than 10,000 Congregations in Providing Care

Are there hurting people in your church or community whose needs are going unmet? Can you imagine the difference it would make to have 10 or 20 lay caregivers in your church who are well-trained and ready to respond to people in need? More than 10,000 churches have learned an effective, proven strategy for equipping laypeople to provide high-quality, distinctively Christian care.

On Saturday, 11/5/2011, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cincinnati is hosting a Stephen Ministry Workshop from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., and refreshments will be served. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for church leaders and other members to learn about the Stephen Series, a ministry system that equips and mobilizes laypeople for effective caring ministry.

Practical Ministry Skills

At the workshop, you will experience a sample of the training Stephen Ministers (lay caregivers) receive, and you will take home practical knowledge and skills on “Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief” and “How to Care in a Distinctively Christian Way.” You will also learn why churches from more than 150 different Christian denominations use the Stephen Series for training and organizing laypeople for one-to-one caring ministry.

A Highly Affordable Workshop

Good Shepherd members are invited to attend the workshop at no cost. Please contact Anne Miller at amiller@goodshepherd.com to register. For others in the community, the cost of the workshop is $15 per person or $50 for a group of four or more from the same congregation. For more information, or to register for the Stephen Ministry Workshop, call Stephen Ministries at (314) 428-2600. You can also register online at www.stephenministry.org/workshop. We hope to see you at the workshop!

 WHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?

It is a ministry by trained, caring lay people through which one of our members reaches out to another in time of need.
It is a response to Christ’s instruction ... “to love one another as I have loved you”.
It is a commitment to caring and supporting one another, to building a Christ-centered, sharing community.
It is a religious and educational system of training and organization, which is already working in over 6000 churches in 70 denominations.

WHAT IS A STEPHEN MINISTER?
A caring Christian desiring to offer his / her support to others in time of need.
A sharing Christian bringing who he / she is to each caring relationship.
A trained Christian having developed his / her caring skills through intensive course work.
A dedicated Christian commissioned by our church to provide confidential, in-depth caring.

A STEPHEN MINISTER IS NOT ...
A professional counselor or psychologist.
A social worker providing lots of physical services.
An expert in law, finance, or church doctrine.
A brief, superficial visitor “touching base” with people now and then.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE CAN BENEFIT FROM STEPHEN MINISTERS?
People who are ... hospitalized or shut-in ... grieving or lonely ... separated or divorced ... terminally ill ... family of the terminally ill ... struggling with job loss ... struggling with their faith in God.

BENEFITS OF STEPHEN MINISTRY TO GOOD SHEPHERD AND TO THE COMMUNITY
Our community as a whole grows in warmth and love.  Caring is contagious!  People receiving care and support experience an increased closeness to Christ and His people.  Stephen Ministers themselves experience personal growth and enrichment of their own lives.

HOW DOES STEPHEN MINISTRY WORK AT GOOD SHEPHERD?

Training of Stephen Ministers
The Stephen Ministry program prepares interested men and women to become Stephen Ministers through 50 hours of training.  Topics of training include:  dealing with feelings, effective listening, confidentiality, crisis care, use of spiritual resources, and specialized training on grief, divorce, stress, and depression.  (A new training session is taking place now, September 2010 thru February 2011.)

Referrals
People who would like to meet with a Stephen Minister contact one of the pastors or Stephen Leaders.  A Stephen Leader then confidentially assigns a Stephen Minister to the Care Receiver.  The Stephen Minister makes an initial contact with the Care Receiver to schedule weekly or biweekly meetings.

Supervision of Stephen Minister
The Stephen Ministers meet with Stephen Leaders twice each month in supervisory teams to receive on-going support and continuing education.  This supervision improves their ability to provide quality Christian care.
